Pet Care

You decided to bring your pet with you on your journey to Spain and have already taken care of the costs of shipping and chipping your furry friend (see the Rota Welcome Guide 2017 if you need more information on getting your pet to Rota). A big question once you arrive is, how do you care for your pet while you are there? The following section provides information on vet clinics and pet hotels.

Southern Spain enjoys a temperate climate year-round. Consequently, there are some parasites that flourish in this region that you might not be aware of back in the United States. One disease of particular concern is Leishmaniasis. This potentially fatal disease is transmitted by sand flies and if your pet is infected they cannot return to the United States. In order to provide optimal protection for your dog, Rota Branch Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) recommends monthly use of preventative products for sand flies, ticks, fleas, heartworms and intestinal parasites year-round in Spain. The VTF can answer your specific questions regarding parasite control upon arrival.

There are a few options when it comes to taking care of your pet while in Spain. For veterinary clinics, the on-base clinic is operated by the Army Veterinary Corps — and that information is listed below. We’ve also listed off-base options below that.

On-Base

The Rota Branch Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) Rota has one U.S. Army veterinarian whose primary mission is food inspection. Routine pet care is a secondary function and this service is available when time allows.

As a general treatment facility, the VTF provides the following services:

  • Preventative health exams and client education
  • Surgeries (spay, neuter and dental surgery)
  • Minor sick calls
  • Routine vaccinations
  • Testing for heartworm
  • Feline leukemia or leishmaniasis
  • Basic blood work and chemistry
  • Allergy testing
  • Basic ultrasound
  • Flea and tick preventatives
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Dental health supplies
  • Health certificates
  • Spanish exportation paperwork and pet passports

VTF does not offer emergency services. If you have an emergency please contact your closest emergency facility (numbers are listed in the off-base options below). The Rota Branch VTF does not board pets for appointments nor does Naval Station Rota have a pet boarding kennel on-base. Please plan accordingly.
