NSWC Carderock Division employees support local elementary and middle school students as part of the FIRST LEGO League robotics program. Employees mentor teams of 10 students formed from schools, a group of friends, clubs or organizations and range in age from 9-12 years old.

The league consists of over 25,000 teams in approximately 80 countries. Students learn to program an autonomous robot to score points on a thematic playing surface in order to solve various challenges. Robotics challenges help to inspire children to become future STEM leaders by fostering self-confidence, expand technical skills and inspires innovation.

NSWC Carderock Division also sponsors a competition modeled after the FIRST LEGO League on site.
