Does a career with Portsmouth Naval Shipyard mean that I am enlisting in the Navy?

No. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS) hires civilians to support the U.S. Navy. You will be a federal government civilian employee, not a member of the armed forces. As a civilian employee at NAVSEA, you will perform important work that supports the security of the United States and helps our Sailors and Marines defend our nation abroad. You may work side-by-side with active duty men and women, but PNSY is staffed predominantly by civilians.
Do I need to be a U.S. citizen to work for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard?

Yes, you must be a United States citizen when you apply for a NAVSEA position. We do not assist individuals in applying for U.S. citizenship.
Will I need a security clearance to obtain a job at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard?

An active security clearance is not required for immediate employment with NAVSEA. However, applicants must be able to meet the requirements to obtain a security clearance. Therefore, applicants must be 18 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen.
Will I earn as much as in the private sector? What benefits does NAVSEA offer?

Federal government salaries are comparable to those in the private sector. Additionally, your earning potential will increase based upon your performance and tenure. Due to security restrictions, requests for history tours including Peace Treaty Room access by veterans associations, community groups, and others are considered strictly on a case-by-case basis. Alternatively, there are museums and memorials located in the Seacoast area that are open to the public.
