TRFB command history

Trident Refit Facility Bangor (TRFB) was established on July 1, 1981 as the primary maintenance facility for the West Coast Ballistic Missile Submarine (SSBN) fleet under the command of Navy Capt. M. S. Greer, Jr.

TRFB utilizes the Delta Pier (so named because its triangular configuration resembles the Greek letter Delta), to refit submarines. The Delta Pier was built by Naval Submarine Base Bangor in support of Trident submarines. The unique design of the Delta Pier was constructed parallel to the shoreline and has one of the largest dry docks build by the Navy. It can support five of the eight Pacific Fleet Trident submarines at one time.

On Aug. 12, 1982, the USS Ohio (SSGN 726) was the first Trident submarine to arrive at TRFB for maintenance.

In 1998, TRFB consolidated with Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity (SIMA), Everett and its detachment Bremerton, and became known as Naval Intermediate Maintenance Facility, Pacific Northwest (IMF).

In October of 2003, IMF consolidated with the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and became a subordinate command of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF).  The civilian workforce was consolidated with the shipyard workforce, and many support functions were combined under PSNS&IMF.

On June 4, 2004, a significant milestone was reached when the 500th Trident refit was completed on the USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735).

On Nov. 7, 2008, TRFB became an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star Site, granted to organizations with injury and illness rates below the industry average and have safety and health programs beyond the minimum OSHA requirements.

On Oct. 1, 2018, an organizational realignment was executed that returned the civilian workforce to TRFB, and stood-up many support functions at TRFB that were previously provided by PSNS&IMF.  The command was officially renamed Trident Refit Facility Bangor on Nov. 15, 2018.

Today, TRFB maintains a single focus to support the nation’s strategic deterrence mission by repairing, incrementally overhauling, and modernizing SSBN submarines during refits for the Ohio-class and the future Columbia-class until the end of service life. The TRFB team is comprised of approximately 500 military and 1,500 civilians.
