Students Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART)
The SMART Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of War (DoW) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Selected students will intern at their sponsoring facility for each summer they are in school. They will be paired with a technical mentor and perform in-person research each summer at their sponsoring facility.
Eligibility requirements:
- U.S. citizen
- 18 years of age or older by Jan.1, 2028
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Planning to attend in Fall 2027, or enrolled in a U.S. accredited college
- Pursuing a degree in STEM
- Accept a one-for-one service commitment as a DoW civilian employee after graduation

Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP)
NREIP is a 10-week internship program is designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in in-person research at a participating DoW laboratories under the guidance of an experienced mentor in their area of study.
Eligibility requirements:
- U.S. citizen
- Open to sophomore, junior, senior or graduate students
- Enrolled at a participating university
- All majors relevant to the research interests of the laboratories

STEM Internship Programs
STEM 90 is a less than 90-day internship appointment designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in an internship at NUWC Division Newport under the guidance of an experienced mentor in their area of study. Interns must work full time for a period of less than 90 days.
STEM 640 is an internship appointment designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in research at NUWC Division Newport under the guidance of an experienced mentor in their area of study while they pursue their degree. Interns have flexible work schedules throughout the school year. Upon completion of 640 hours of work interns may be eligible to convert to a full-time position.
Eligibility requirements:
- U.S. citizen
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a program of undergraduate or graduate instruction leading to a bachelor’s or advanced degree in a STEM course of study at an institution of higher learning.
- Must meet Office of Personnel Management (OPM) qualifications for professional and scientific positions.
- Students must be enrolled at least half time (as defined by the institution) to be appointed and to maintain eligibility throughout program.
- Students must sign a Participant Agreement with the agency that sets forth the expectations of the internship.
- An intern’s job will be related to the intern’s academic career goals or field of study.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable security adjudication.
- Males must meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement.
