Obtaining a South Carolina Driver’s License

It is legal to drive on an Australian license for 90 days in South Carolina (SC). After this you will need a SC license.

Applicants for a SC license need a Fixed Address in South Carolina and two types of proof (i.e. lease, electricity bill) for that address. If the applicant is living at NNPTC, the command will be able to provide proof. In addition, applicants will need copies of the following:

  • Proof of Address ( x 2)
  • Salary letter (From Embassy)
  • Official Passport + Visa
  • I-94 (Record of Entry into the US)
    -  Once in the US you can search and print your I-94 from the following website: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home
  • Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Filled out MV-94 (Can fill out at DMV, otherwise at the reference)

The only two locations that deal with international licenses are:

Charleston-Leeds; 3790 Leeds Ave, North Charleston, SC 29405: TEL: 843 740 6168

Charleston- Orleans; 946 Orleans Rd, Charleston SC 29407: TEL: 843 852 2636

Take copy of the above to a South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that deals with international customers. You can search for locations via this website (https://www.scdmvonline.com/Locations), filter by International Customers.

It is a requirement to pass a knowledge, vision and driving tests with an instructor. Information tested is taken from the South Carolina Driver’s Manual (https://www.scdmvonline.com/Forms-And-Manuals). There is also a practice online test available (https://apps.sc.gov/dlpracticeexam/regdl/startexam).

Car Insurance

Upon arrival in SC Australian Nuclear Power students should be given a rental car. Insurance for the rental car is not needed while driving this rental, as that car company technically insures you. This gives provides a buffer to find a personally owned vehicle and insurance for that vehicle.

It’s a requirement to be insured while driving in SC, however they only require a minimum amount for bodily injury (25/50/25). It is STRONGLY recommended to get comprehensive insurance (i.e. above the minimum limit).
