On-Base

Admission to any hospital, no matter the location is always a cause for concern and can be a cause of stress and anxiety. When that admission takes place in a foreign country it can easily double the amount of stress and place an unneeded burden on the family. The vision of U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Rota is to provide world-class patient centered care in collaboration with regional military treatment facilities and host nation partners.

USNH Rota is a small community hospital with 23-beds and a dental clinic. A wide variety of diagnostic and surgical services are available to its patients. Board certified providers, active duty sailors, government civilians, local national employees, contracted staff and Red Cross volunteers, rotating specialists and a robust network of local providers comprise team Rota.

While USNH Rota prides itself on its ability to deliver a quality healthcare program, there are limitations on certain types of available specialty services that can be cared for within USNH Rota. As part of the TRICARE Overseas Program (TOP), the Defense Health Agency (DHA), TRICARE Area Office Europe-Asia (TAO-EA), the Managed Care Support Contractor (MCSC) as well as International SOS have established written agreements with local Spanish health care providers and medical facilities to ensure the more complex needs of our patients can be met without the need for leaving the area. Apart from the cultural differences, Spanish facilities offer high quality care similar to that of an American hospital.

Off-Base

USCS workers and their families generally operate on a space available basis for appointments at USNH Rota. If you are unable to schedule a “space-a” appointment in a timely manner at USNH Rota, off-base Spanish facilities offer high quality care similar to that of an American hospital. Below is a link to USNH Rota’s referral management. Please note that the information within is not a comprehensive list. See your sponsor or call the referral department at USNH Rota for more specific recommendations.

Patients requiring additional specialty care not available at the hospital receive support coordinating appointments with the local host nation medical network. The referral management office provides assistance with the medical translation of your referral, preparing necessary documentation, making the appointment and ensuring you have all the logistics needed to get to the appointment location. If you need a medical translator to join you, you can meet them at the facility or ride along with them to the appointment.
