Day of Arrival

There are two methods to arrive to Naples by plane: Commercial and AMC (military flight). Both commercial and military aircraft land at the same runway. NSA Capodichino Naval base and AMC terminal are on one side of the runway and the Naples International Airport is on the other.

As of Jan 2019, there are no direct commercial flights from Naples from the United States. All flights into Naples will have first landed in a different European airport (e.g. Rome, Paris, Frankfurt, etc.). It is through this European airport layover that you clear passport control and immigration. The “Schengen Area” is the immigration zone within the E.U. that allows crossing borders within Europe without passports. So, what does this mean? You will enter the E.U. and by default, clear Italian customs and immigration upon landing in Europe. Your first E.U. airport is where you will clear passport control.

If you take the rotator (AMC military flight), then you will clear customs at the AMC terminal upon arrival in Italy.

Follow the signs for Baggage Claim. In case of lost luggage, passengers need to go to the Lost and Found Office located on the ground floor of the terminal arrivals area and fill out the P.I.R (Property Irregularity Report). For information, please refer to contacts indicated on your P.I.R. or Lost & Found Offices: lost&found@ghnapoli.it

DoD civilians and family members, including children, require a passport and a Missione visa for entry into Italy. You must obtain these Missione visas and a passport prior to your entry into Italy. Request and receive the visa through your travel office or from the nearest Italian Consulate prior to your departure from the United States. Visas require several weeks to obtain, and you cannot obtain a visa once you arrive in Italy. It is strongly recommended you start this process early so your entire family may transfer with you.

Once you’ve collected your baggage, you’ll find ATM machines in the Arrivals concourse, the Customer Service desk is in the Arrivals area of the ground floor should you have any questions, and Rental car counters for major rental agencies are located in the Arrivals area of the terminals.

After arriving at the Naples Airport, there are several ways to get to your hotel.

Navy Gateway Inn and Suites (NGIS)
If you are staying at the (NGIS) at NSA Naples Capodichino, you are only a short walk away once you’ve collected your baggage and exited the terminal. If you arrived on the Rotator, you are already on base and can simply take a left out of the military terminal and walk approximately 5 minutes to building 453. There should be a representative waiting at the terminal to direct you to the NGIS after you collect your baggage. If you arrived commercially into Naples, take a left out of the airport, walk through a small parking lot, and take a left at the first street. You will be able to see the front gate to NSA Naples Capodichino in front of you. This part of the walk takes about 5 minutes. From the Main Gate, follow the NGIS signs and walk another ten minutes to building number 453, which is located in front of the east parking garage at the end of the base. To enter the front gate, simply show your DoD ID. If you are bringing more luggage than you can easily walk with, it is recommended to have your sponsor arrange to pick you up in front of the Naples airport or military terminal and drive you to the NGIS.

Navy Lodge
The Navy Lodge is located on NSA Naples Support Site approximately 20 minutes from the Naples Capodichino Airport. If you are staying at the Navy Lodge, it is recommended to have your sponsor pick you up or arrange transportation for you from the Naples Airport to NSA Naples Support Site with a DoD ID carrying member. You can take a taxi, but you will be dropped off outside the Support Site gate and will need to walk approximately 5 minutes to the Navy Lodge. If you are traveling with a large family or excessive baggage, please know it will be difficult to find a large taxi.

Additional Arrival Information
Within eight days of your arrival in Italy, Italian law requires all DoD civilian employees and their family members to apply for a Sojourner Permit, the Permesso di Soggiorno. This document is issued by the Italian government. A Sojourner Permit is a confirmation of your legal resident status in Italy, much like an American Green Card. Very important to note that if you do not have a visa upon arrival in Italy, you cannot obtain a Sojourner Permit. It is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person’s signature is required at the time of application. Part of this procedure is the requirement to fingerprint individuals aged 18 and older.

As part of the Area Orientation process, the Region Legal Service Office, Europe Africa, Southwest Asia (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists with the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Before you travel to Italy, you must have all necessary documents for the permit — specifically a Missione visa issued by an Italian Consulate inside your U.S. passport. Civilians should always carry their Sojourner Permit and passport when traveling to other countries. While commuting in the local area, it is a good idea to carry a photo-copy of your Sojourner Permit in case you are stopped by police.
