The Colosseum

Estimated to be able to hold up to 80,000 spectators, the Colosseum (or Coliseum) is an oval amphitheater in the center of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of travertine, tuff and brick-faced concrete, it is the largest amphitheater ever built. The Colosseum is situated just east of the Roman Forum.

Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius looms high over Naples and the surrounding areas and can be seen from many locations. Day trips depart from Naples to visit the volcano and historic areas that were preserved in ash when it erupted in 79 AD, including Pompeii and Herculaneum.

USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20)

USS Mount Whitney (MTW) serves as the Command Ship for Commander, Sixth Fleet/ Commander, Joint Command Lisbon/Commander, Striking Force NATO and has a complement of 150 enlisted personnel, 12 officers and 150 Civilian Mariners from Military Sealift Command. The flagship of the SIXTH Fleet and forward deployed to Gaeta, Italy, USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) was constructed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company and is named for the 14,505-foot peak in the Sierra-Nevada range in California, the highest point in the lower continental United States. It is the first ship in the U.S. Navy to bear this name.

Venice

The Italian harbor city of Venice is famous for its many canals and bridges. Built along the shores of the Adriatic Sea, the canals were used for protection, sheltering the city from the mainland, and transportation within the city.

Gulf of Naples

The Gulf of Naples, also called the Bay of Naples, is a roughly 15-kilometer-wide (9.3 mi) gulf located along the south-western coast of Italy and opens to the west into the Mediterranean Sea. Naples has had a long relationship with the sea.

What You Need to Know

What you need to know Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center (FDRMC) Naples provides the sustainment, fleet technical assistance and voyage repair to naval ships and craft operating within the FIFTH and SIXTH Fleet area of operations (AOR). Manned with numerous highly specialized technicians the staff provides Distance Support and Fleet Technical Assistance to the ships deployed to Mediterranean Sea, while a cadre of maintenance professional provide oversight for Continuous Maintenance Availabilities (CMAVs) on ships and the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense facilities in Romania and Poland. In addition, the staff at Naples serve as the headquarters for the FDRMC, providing command and control functions and oversight for the maintenance detachments in Manama, Bahrain and Rota, Spain.
