SIXTH Fleet

The SIXTH Fleet is the United States Navy's operational fleet and staff of United States Naval Forces Europe. Headquartered in Naples, the Naval Support Activity has been continually engaged in world affairs around the Mediterranean, and, on occasion, further afield since 1950.

The officially stated mission of the SIXTH Fleet is that it “conducts the full range of Maritime Operations and Theater Security Cooperation missions, in concert with coalition, joint, interagency, and other parties, in order to advance security and stability in Europe and Africa.”

The Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa (NAVEUR-NAVAF) area of responsibility (AOR) covers approximately half of the Atlantic Ocean, from the Arctic Ocean to the coast of Antarctica; as well as the Adriatic, Baltic, Barents, Black, Caspian, Mediterranean, and North seas.

The AOR covers all of Russia and Europe, and nearly the entire continent of Africa. It encompasses 105 countries with a combined population of more than 1 billion people and includes a landmass of more than 14 million square miles. It covers more than 20 million square nautical miles of ocean, touches three continents and encompasses more than 67 percent of the Earth's coastline, 30 percent of its landmass, and nearly 40 percent of the world’s population.
