What is it?

The Triton system will report in real time when a ship’s powering condition has degraded due to increased drag from biofouling. 

How does it work?

TRITON calculates the additional fuel spent on propulsion to overcome increased friction due to biofouling and provides data to the Energy Dashboard to report the percentage by which fuel consumption is impaired, at a confidence level of 95%.

What will it accomplish?

Navy personnel will be empowered to schedule ship cleanings utilizing feedback taken from actual measurements of drag while in service; thus, hull and propeller cleanings will occur at times that maximize ship fuel economy.  This capability will reduce the current penalty paid by the Fleet to overcome the negative effects of biofouling on ship performance and fuel expenditure.
