DAHLGREN, Va. — Western Kentucky University student Abbie Schopper explains a prototype pitot static air velocity probe tested for use in a shipboard duct while briefing Navy personal during her 2016 summer  internship, sponsored by the Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP). “Throughout this summer, I have enjoyed my experience working here at Dahlgren, but I also feel like I have gained important experiences that are not found in the undergraduate curriculum,” said Schopper, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. “I would recommend NREIP to anyone with a STEM major, and would love to return.” Schopper’s project focused on air flow rate measurements for the shipboard Collective Protection System (CPS).  Shipboard CPS air flow measurement procedures and instruments were selected decades ago based on instrumentation available at that time. With the development of variable speed drive control and automation of CPS, more accurate air flow measurements are needed. “Abbie determined an accurate method for measuring air flow in Collective Protection System zones installed with variable speed drive controls to decrease the air flow in non-threatening situations,” said Will Clark, NSWCDD mechanical engineer and CPS expert.
