New waterjet cutting machine increases efficiency at Norfolk Naval Shipyard

A Norfolk Naval Shipyard worker monitors a precision water cut on the shipyard's new water jet cutting machine. The shipyard uses the water jet cutting machine to fabricate new parts or replace worn parts during maintenance availabilities. The machine cuts a wide variety of materials using a high- pressure jet of water mixed with an abrasive substance. It was purchased and installed as part of NAVSEA's efforts to replace worn equipment and improve productivity.

US Navy Divers Keep Students Safe at Carderock During International Human-Powered Submarine Races

Sailors assigned to Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) stand by to assist in the David Taylor Model Basin during the 14th International Human-Powered Submarine Races (ISR) at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division in West Bethesda, Md., June 28, 2017. NEDU and supporting dive-qualified Sailors in the National Capital Region are helping ensure a safe competition between the students at Carderock racing human-powered submersibles they designed and built for the biennial event, which is sponsored by the Foundation for Underwater Research and Education and is considered the capstone event for science, technology, engineering and mathematics outreach at Carderock.

During this biennial engineering design competition, high school and college engineering students team up to design, build and operate a human-powered submarine and navigate it through an underwater course.

(June 15, 2017) - Navy scientist Charles Miller and mathematician Jessica Hildebrand perform pre-flight checks on the SCAPEGOAT chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) detection system. The SCAPEGOAT system - developed by a team of Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division junior scientists and engineers - demonstrates the capability to deploy a modular CBR sensor system aboard multiple unmanned aerial vehicle platforms.
