CRANE, Ind. – When Judy Mullis was a young student, she would help her teachers in the classroom. Throughout her professional and personal life, Mullis has continued to take on roles where she assisted others. Mullis, who is currently a Reporting and Training Lead and a Contracting Officer’s Representative at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane), has spent thirty years in the financial industry.
As a Reporting and Financial Lead, Mullis is using her years of expertise to teach others. In this role, she has created courses that help ensure newly hired employees receive positon-specific training to be able to completely perform their duties. One of the courses is Financial Management, which goes into how funding comes from Congress to Crane.
“I help others better support the warfighter,” says Mullis. “In these courses, they broaden their scope of training which helps them be more efficient and proficient in how financials and government works. We take a step back and look at the big picture and how that impacts the employee’s work. They get a better understanding of strategy, perspective, and knowledge of various employees and work at Crane.”
The second course is for new Task Managers and new Technical Project Managers. The course ties both the technical and the financial aspects of Crane together.
“I love to develop classes and teach others,” says Mullis. “There was a need for these courses to provide a more comprehensive understanding of how technical capability and financials work. We hear the phrase, ‘support the warfighter’ all the time, but you may not realize how what you do affects the warfighter. Once you understand how everything is connected, you want to come to work. It’s a humbling and proud feeling.”
Mullis spends much of her free time helping others in the community. She volunteers at the Lyons Veterans Memorial Committee and organizes a fundraising dinner each year. She has served on the Federal Employed Women Board. She and her husband were awarded Greene County Daily World’s 2017 Difference Makers of the Year and WTHI’s November 7, 2019 Person of the Day for their volunteer efforts.
Mullis says the training program at Crane is a way for her to help others toward the end of her thirty-year career
“I learn as well through teaching. It’s rewarding when people make the connection. I want to teach them endurance, competence, and confidence so they will be successful.”
Mullis says that with more comprehensive knowledge, employees can carve their own careers.
“All this training helps them evolve their jobs to be what and how they want,” says Mullis. “This training can inspire them if they want to grow and learn.”
