JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii - Rear Adm. Tom Anderson, Commander, Navy Regional Maintenance Center, and Naval Sea Systems Command Deputy Commander for Ship Maintenance and Modernization visited Hawaii Regional Maintenance Center (HRMC) at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) Aug. 22 and 23.

Since assuming command on May 31, Anderson’s priority has been to visit all of the activities in the organization within his first 90 days. During his visit to HRMC, Anderson met with the Sailors and civilians that comprise the force behind the fleet, toured USS Port Royal (CG-73), and walked through the repair facilities that keep ship’s operationally ready.

As part of his visit, Anderson spoke at an all-hands assembly in front of historic Building 1 and congratulated three new graduates of the Gas Turbine Repair Program.

During the all hands, Anderson emphasized, “Our Navy is an away team. We take the fight to them. In the heat of battle, we need to be able to maintain ourselves.”   Anderson then challenged the graduates, stating he wanted three things from them. “One, put your training to work; two, be an envoy for the program; and three, show initiative to fix it yourself. There is no shortage of hard work to keep ships operational.”

Capt. Greg Burton, PHNSY & IMF Commander, concluded the all-hands meeting by calling on both military and civilian workers show their commitment to do their best with the shipyard’s motto, “No Ka ‘OI,” which means “of the best” in Hawaiian.

PHNSY & IMF is a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command and a one-stop regional maintenance center for the Navy’s surface ships and submarines. It is the largest industrial employer in the state of Hawaii, with a combined civilian and military workforce of approximately 6,000. It is the most comprehensive fleet repair and maintenance facility between the U.S. West Coast and the Far East, strategically located in the heart of the Pacific, being about a week’s steaming time closer to potential regional contingencies in East Asia.
