Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center Completes USS Dextrous Availability Ahead of Schedule

NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY BAHRAIN (June 2, 2021) – Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center (FDRMC) Detachment Bahrain completed the USS Dextrous (MCM 13) Selected Restricted Availability (SRA) on June 2, 17 days ahead of schedule.

The USS Dextrous (MCM 13) began her maintenance availability February 14 at Bahrain Ship Repair and Engineering Company (BASREC). The SRA took 108 days to complete and included typical maintenance items as well as multiple system upgrades and installations.

“The keys to FDRMC Bahrain’s success were the great initiatives implemented and leadership of Cmdr. Carole Etherington and the senior leadership of FDRMC Bahrain” said Capt. Gustavo Vergara, Commanding Officer for FDRMC. “By awarding the contract earlier, and creating an integrated and executable schedule prior to the start of the availability, we were able to complete the availability more than two weeks ahead of schedule.”

The availability was awarded about two months in advance and included a Schedule Model Review. This allowed the contractor to have an integrated, executable schedule prior to the start of the availability.

“The success of this availability is a result of an increased emphasis on the planning effort, the ability of the team to react quickly and the teamwork between the FDRMC project team, ship’s force, NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center, and the BASREC Shipyard workers,” said Cmdr. Carole Etherington, Officer in Charge at FDRMC Detachment Bahrain. “This teamwork on this project raised the bar for future availabilities.”

When asked about the availability, Project Manager, Casey Young, said, “I knew from day one this availability would be successful. The FDRMC project team, ship’s force, Port Engineer and contractor were all committed to returning the ship to its mission on time. Our shared vison and determination allowed nothing to stand in our way.”

The USS Dextrous (MCM 13) is a Mine Countermeasure (MCM) Ship, which is capable of finding, classifying and destroying moored and bottom mines. These ships serve a vital role in ensuring freedom of navigation in the Arabian Gulf, an important body of water for international travel.

FDRMC provides contract management oversight, fleet technical assistance, voyage repair and diving and salvage to Forward Deployed Naval Forces in Europe and the Middle East and for Deployed ships in the 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.
