The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation
(SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department
of Defense (DOD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing
degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers
working at DOD laboratories.
Program Highlights
This is a summer program for college students pursuing a bachelors
or masters degree. The students receive a full scholarship from DOD, including
living expenses, tuition and fees, and commit to working at NUWC Division
Newport upon completion of degree.

DOD pays the full scholarship plus stipend during the full time summer
internship at NUWC Division Newport.
Eligibility

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen.

A student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (as calculated by the SMART application).

Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the disciplines listed on the website.

Applicants must be willing to accept post-graduate employment with NUWC Division Newport.

Applicants must be able to obtain an interim security clearance.
