NSWC Crane Scientist Receives Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientists and Engineers of the Year Award

Dr. Andrew Christianson, Chief Engineer (CHENG), Electronic Warfare (EW) Advanced Concepts Group Lead, was awarded as a 2021 Assistant Secretary of Navy (Research, Development and Acquisition) Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientists and Engineers of the Year.

“I have always been inspired by our sailors’ commitment and sacrifice to achieving the Navy’s mission,” said Christianson. “I do the best I can to support them using my engineering background, so this award is very meaningful to me. I also know it means a lot to the team to see our efforts receive this recognition.”

His nomination said he, “made contributions in advancing Department of Defense (DoD) Electronic Warfare future systems capabilities in the areas of adaptive emitters, deep machine learning algorithms and passive defense technologies for passively locating, identifying and targeting more adaptive and/or cognitive emitter technologies.”

With the DoD’s largest concentration of Multi-Spectral, Multi-Domain (air, land, sea) EW Expertise, NSWC Crane leads the Navy in electromagnetic capability development.  Spanning all branches of the military, NSWC Crane has the largest concentration of technical EW expertise, facilities, and equipment.  NSWC Crane provides distinct electronic warfare and integrated sensing technology to Control the Electromagnetic Spectrum in order to Control the Fight.

Christianson’s work has been a highly successful Science and Technology (S&T) transition story with the following message from a large Navy program of record, “Your analysis has had a significant impact on the development of this capability … (and) helped with upgrades that will field in future builds.”
