Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & IMF, Hawaii – On Sept. 5, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) had the privilege of hosting Sen. David Perdue of Georgia and Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii. Sens. Perdue and Hirono are the Chair and Ranking Member, respectively, of the Subcommittee on Seapower, which is a part of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Their critical leadership roles oversee recommendations for appropriations of shipyard funds, which allows PHNSY & IMF to keep our fleet fit to fight – whether it is funding new infrastructure, funding the projects themselves, or anything else the yard uses or manages. Sen. Perdue only recently assumed leadership of the Subcommittee on Seapower in early 2018, but already knew of Sen. Hirono’s commitment to supporting and funding PHNSY & IMF calling her “the strongest advocate for the shipyard in Congress.”
While Sen. Hirono has visited PHNSY & IMF several times before, this was Sen. Perdue’s first experience at a public naval shipyard. Captain Burton and senior shipyard leaders took the opportunity to brief both senators with a full overview of the shipyard and provided insight into the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Plan (SIOP), including the direct impact for PHNSY & IMF.
After the brief and insightful questions from the senators, senior leaders facilitated a thorough tour of the shipyard. Tour highlights included observing historic buildings and the No Ka ‘Oi sign, viewing the dry docks and finger piers, learning about the need for infrastructure improvement to meet maintenance availability needs, and understanding workforce challenges and opportunities.
Sens. Perdue and Hirono expressed their appreciation at having the opportunity to see the shipyard first hand, hear directly from senior shipyard leaders and better understand the need for the $21 billion investment for SIOP.
