Norco Navy to Host Open House Science Experience and STEM Career Fair

By Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona Public Affairs NSWC Corona

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division, will host a public open house and career fair at the Norco naval base on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for all ages to discover the fun of science and engineering.

The free event is an opportunity for the public to visit one of the country's prestigious federal laboratory facilities. The command’s human resources department will be on hand to discuss job opportunities and make employment offers on the spot to qualified candidates. High school and college students can lean about Navy internship programs and the Department of Defense SMART Scholarship program for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) degrees. In addition, the command’s small business office will be available to advise on how to do business with the warfare center.

"We have hundreds of Navy scientists and engineers making an impact around the world," said Capt. Rick Braunbeck, Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona commanding officer. "This is an exciting opportunity for the public to learn about our mission and unique facilities while interacting with some of the men and women working behind the scenes – right here in the Inland Empire – to keep our warfighters equipped, safe and ready."

To help inspire the next generation of Navy scientists and engineers, exhibits will focus on STEM and include thermal imaging cameras, augmented reality training displays, cybersecurity challenges and a Navy dive tank. The lineup of activities also includes multiple laboratory tours and laser light experience. Community exhibitors and educational partners, such as University of California Riverside, California Baptist University, Cal Poly Pomona and the Natural History Museum Ocean Experience, will also have hands-on STEM activities.

"Our Navy team loves this event because it’s as much fun for us as it is for the community. It's a time to celebrate STEM, our important mission in the Inland Empire and our valued relationship with the community," Braunbeck said.

Visitors are asked to enter through the Fifth Street gate at 2300 Fifth Street in Norco no earlier than 10 a.m. Drivers must present a valid license, current vehicle registration and insurance. Police will conduct random vehicle spot checks. Alcohol is prohibited. Photography will be allowed in the main exhibit areas but electronic devices will not be permitted during the laboratory tour. Visitors are asked to leave all electronic devices, such as smartphones and tablets, in their vehicles. About Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona:

This year marks the Navy's 77th year in the Inland Empire when President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Corona Naval Hospital at the luxurious Norconian Hotel and Resort just days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Decades later, Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona remains at the center of the original property with more than 3,300 scientists, engineers, contractors and support staff. With four federal laboratories and assessment centers, three of which are in Norco – the Joint Warfare Assessment Lab, Measurement Science and Technology Lab and the Daugherty Memorial Assessment Center – Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona is the Navy's premiere independent analysis and assessment agent, enabling warfighters to train, fight and win.
