Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard Employees Promote Apprentice Program at Waipahu High School

By Marc Ayalin Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility

Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) employees spoke with students from Waipahu High School about the PHNSY & IMF Apprentice Program, Feb. 25, 2022. The event was part of the high school’s job fair in which students from the Design and Technology Academy met with various organizations to learn about different employment programs. The PHNSY & IMF Apprentice Program is a successful partnership between the shipyard, the U.S. Department of Labor, and Honolulu Community College. Graduating apprentices earn a tuition-paid Associate in Applied Science degree, and a certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor. The four-year program also prepares students for careers in various industrial trades through on-the-job training and formal academic classes. The shipyard’s apprentice program is and has always been known for developing skilled journey workers, but it also develops future leaders as many leadership positions in the shipyard are held by former apprentice graduates.
