University of Hawaii Students Hold Senior Capstone at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard

This spring, senior students from the University of Hawaii (UH) College of Engineering, presented a design of an underwater robotic arm as part of a Senior Design/Capstone Project at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF). The students presented their project to school staff, faculty and project supervisors from PHNSY & IMF.  The shipyard and the University of Hawaii System maintain an educational partnership in which programs are developed so that students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics may earn academic credit for work on PHNSY & IMF projects to include research and technology. Under this partnership, UH System faculty, staff and students can use PHNSY & IMF engineering assets and resources.  (Official U.S. Navy photo William Anderson)

James Campbell HS Students Explore Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard Trade Opportunities

Rylan Lau, (left) 11th grader at James Campbell High School, is guided by Melvin Cabaccang, a welding skills instructor from Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) during a career-oriented field trip held in mid-April. This event is one of several PHNSY & IMF community outreach programs conducted with local schools. The visit gathered 26 students and three teachers from the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) program that offers students insight in trade industry occupations. During the field trip, representatives from the shipyard’s Production Resource Training Department facilitated the students’ experience with a tour of its welding school including welding demonstrations and an overview of equipment and training facilities used in honing welding trade skills. Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard Employees Promote Apprentice Program at Waipahu High School

The event was part of the school’s job fair in which students from the Design and Technology Academy met with various organizations to learn about different employment programs. The PHNSY & IMF Apprentice Program is a successful partnership between the shipyard, the U.S. Department of Labor, and Honolulu Community College. Graduating apprentices earn a tuition-paid Associate in Applied Science degree, and a certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Mililani Native Selected as Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard’s Senior Executive Service Director

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii – Mr. John Ornellas, the Nuclear Engineering and Planning Manager for the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF), was appointed its newest Senior Executive Service in October. As the organization’s senior civilian, Ornellas reports directly to Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., and is responsible for properly controlling radioactive work on nuclear propulsion plants.
