With Flying Colors: VET-ERG Partners with NNSY to Restore Flagpoles Across the Base

A team of Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) and Naval Facilities Public Works employees worked together to perform inspections and install fittings on five flagpoles across the base to meet the goal of having all flagpoles flying colors for Independence Day. The team included NAVFAC Maintenance Mechanic Justin Carter, Assistant Public Works Officer Lt. Dylan Berns, Learning Organizations 101 Program Administrator Jonathan Echols, Veteran Employee Readiness Group (VET-ERG) President Nicholas Boyle, Preservation Manager Lamont Watson, Crane Maintenance Waterfront Branch Supervisor Charles Sykes, Electrician Apprentice Nathaniel Sarracent, Electrician Lorenea Doles, Painter Herbert Phillpots, Preservation Department Supervisor James Wallace, and Preservation Department Process Manager Gaston Shaw.

Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), Vice Admiral Bill Galinis visited Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) June 30 to see firsthand how America’s Shipyard supports the NAVSEA mission of delivering ships and submarines back to the Fleet.  Galinis’ visit included walkthroughs and discussions of ongoing work in NNSY’s Mechanical, Piping, Structural and Special Emphasis Shops.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s Engineering and Planning Department supports upcoming USS Essex availability

While capitalizing on teleworking and technology, Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) is using a team of 52 engineers and technicians to support an integrated shipcheck on USS Essex (LHD-2) at Naval Base San Diego.  In response to concerns about COVID-19, NNSY’s Engineering and Planning Department has implemented a number of measures to save time and reduce the number of personnel on travel and required to undergo Restriction of Movement (ROM) to support shipchecks.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s Veteran Employee Readiness Group (VET-ERG) presented 113 U.S. Flags to Sturtevant Funeral Home June 12 in honor of Flag Day. The flags were donated from the workforce and from within the community to be part of Sturtevant’s Retire the Flag Program. From Left to Right: VET-ERG Member Ricky Burroughs, VET-ERG Founding Member Jonathan Echols, Sturtevant Funeral Home Representative Robie Gardner, Shipyard Commander Capt. John Frisch of Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s Engineering and Planning Department is one of the civilian volunteers who perform temperature checks for employees coming onboard the shipyard.  “I wear my hardhat so people know I am one of them,” said Frisch. “They respect the job I am doing, many of them say ‘thank you.’ Several have mentioned they feel Norfolk Naval Shipyard really cares about keeping everyone working here safe!”

Norfolk Naval Shipyard Commander, Capt. Kai Torkelson, held a moment of silence at the “Unity at our C.O.R.E.” command event June 9, encouraging each person to reflect in their own way.  In an expression of solidarity, Torkelson took a knee in remembrance of George Floyd and in honor of all Black Americans.
