By PSNS & IMF Public Affairs

After four years of hard work and dedication, learning in a hybrid online and in-person environment, 188 skilled workers graduated from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility Apprentice Program Sept. 20, during a ceremony in the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center.

This year’s graduates represent 26 different trades and maintained an overall class GPA of 3.842. Each graduate received a certificate as a journey-level mechanic in their respective trade, as well as an associate’s degree in technical arts from Olympic College.

Family members, friends, instructors, supervisors, apprentice program alumni and local government officials were all in attendance during the ceremony.

“This journey has been about much more than mastering a trade—it’s been about shaping your identity as a professional, a teammate and a leader,” said Capt. JD Crinklaw, commander, PSNS & IMF. “You are now part of a legacy that spans well over a century. Since 1901, our Apprentice Program has forged thousands of skilled tradespeople and leaders. This rich history is now a part of you. You’ve joined a tradition that values excellence, commitment and continuous improvement.”

Apprentice class speaker Eric Soliday, a Shop 51 marine electrician, spoke to his classmates about their time together and their future in the shipyard at the ceremony.

“Due to our shared conviction, it feels like we have become a family over these four years, forming long-lasting bonds and helping each other succeed," Soliday said. "Our graduating class is providing immense talent to the United States Navy. You all worked hard because of your love and support for your families, respect for your profession, and dedication to yourselves.”

Four graduates received special honors during the ceremony:

Alexander Hurst, electronics mechanic, Shop 67, Electronics Technicians, was named the Apprentice of the Year by the program’s administration.

Zanna Skirvin, machinist, Shop 31, Inside Machinist, received the Scholastic Award from the Federal Manager’s Association, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA, the highest in his program.

Joshua Gray, welder, Shop 26, welders, received the Apprentice Craftsman of the Year Award from the Assistant Production Superintendent’s Association.

Trace Grose, toolmaker, Shop 31, Inside Machinist, received the Leadership Award from the National Association of Superintendents.

The PSNS & IMF Apprentice Program was created in 1901, when the Shipyard Labor Board selected six men to train under skilled craftsmen at the facility. The program has grown to become an award-winning advanced training course for members of the shipyard team. Since 1950, PSNS & IMF has partnered with Olympic College for customized, accredited course work in support of the Apprentice Program.
