By PSNS & IMF Public Affairs

USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) completed an 18-month docking planning incremental availability at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility, March 21.

According to Brian McDermott, USS Theodore Roosevelt Project superintendent, work completed during the availability, which began Sept. 10, 2021, included a variety of regularly scheduled maintenance as well as modernization upgrades.

“[The project team] completed more than 200 modernization upgrades, including a full restoration of crew habitability areas, crew living quarters and onboard bathrooms; and preventative maintenance and restoration of the ship’s hull, rudders and rudder shafts,” McDermott said.

McDermott said the combined team of PSNS & IMF workers, Ship’s Force and contractors accomplished some firsts during this DPIA.

“This is the first post-refueling and complex overhaul docking availability to complete the docking phase in 11 months,” he said.

McDermott credited the professionalism and dedication of the project team for the successes throughout the availability.

“This availability came down to the men and women who come here every day, work long hours, and make countless sacrifices to achieve the mission,” McDermott said. “I am so grateful for the hard work, skill and perseverance of the team to make this ship more capable and in the best fighting shape of its life.”

“There are too many key players to name,” he continued. “From all of our talented tradespeople, to our engineering team, to our inside-shop partners; this was truly a shipyard effort and all who contributed should be proud of what we accomplished.”

Capt. Brian Schrum, commanding officer, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), also recognized the contributions the Roosevelt Team’s efforts will have on national defense.

“I’m so grateful for the unrelenting work our crew and our shipyard teammates put into this milestone,” Schrum said. “Their sacrifices have enabled us to rejoin the fleet and to get back to being a warship for our nation. Thanks as well to our Sailors and their families for their resiliency, and to the Puget Sound communities for their unwavering support.”

Roosevelt was homeported in San Diego before it came to Naval Base Kitsap- Bremerton and PSNS & IMF to complete the DPIA. The ship completed sea trials en route to San Diego, where it will again be homeported.
