WASHINGTON - Washington, DC (July 27, 2019) -- Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipient from Iwo Jima, Hershel "Woody" Williams, spoke to a at NAVSEA headquarters, July 19. Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams received the military's highest decoration for valor for his heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. As a demolition sergeant serving with the 21st Marines, 3d Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, he daringly volunteered to go forward alone to forge a path for the tanks and infantry. Covered only by four rifleman, he laid demolition charges and used a flamethrower to battle enemy riflemen. His unyielding determination and heroism were instrumental in neutralizing one of the most fanatically defended Japanese strongpoints and enabled his company to reach its objective.
