Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, Virginia - DAHLGREN, Va. (Feb. 2, 2018) - Hampton University officials, professors, and students are briefed on U.S. Navy high energy laser programs by Dr. Chris Lloyd, High Energy Laser Lethality lead at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD). Lloyd explained the importance of rigorous modeling and laboratory testing against target materials to ensure high energy laser systems are built that meet the requirements of warfighters once fielded. The Hampton University visitors observed a high power laser demonstration and saw the laboratory's 100 meter long, above ground tunnel. The tunnel - crucial to gun range operations during World War II - was recently transformed into a vital new capability for testing laser technologies.
