Capt. Carlson graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Control Systems Engineering. His first tour was aboard USS Fletcher (DD-992) where he served as Combat Information Center (CIC) Officer then Electrical Officer. Having attained Surface Warfare Officer and Engineering Officer of the Watch qualification, he reported to the pre-commissioning crew of USS Wasp (LHD-1) where he served as her Commissioning CIC Officer. Upon slection to the Engineering Duty Officer Community, he attended the Naval Postgraduate School, earning a Master of Science Degree in Physics in the Weapon Systems Engineering curriculum.
