“If There’s a Will, There’s a Way”— NSWC Dahlgren Division Branch Head Finds Ardor in Giving Back

By NSWCDD Corporate Communications

“Stop waiting for things to happen, go out and make them happen.” As a firm believer in making a difference in her community, Milesha Grier is paving the way for the future of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) students through dedication to her community.

Early on, one of her field trips as a student included a trip to visit and tour a submarine. This gave Grier insight into the world of military defense.

“At a young age, I wanted to be a cowgirl, ride horses and shoot guns,” said Grier. “After I was exposed to STEAM, instead of becoming a cowgirl, I said ‘I am going to build the guns and support Navy weapon systems.’”

Grier studied at numerous universities, which provided a well-rounded education. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering with minors in physics and mathematics from Texas A&M. She later earned a master’s in nuclear engineering from the University of Maryland and a second master’s in defense and strategic studies from the Naval War College.

Grier is currently a branch head within the Integrated Combat Systems Department at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD). She aims to lead and serve her team in its efforts to support the Navy warfighter.

“My ultimate goal at NSWCDD is to enable my team to develop capabilities that we can deploy onto Navy ships,” Grier said.

Grier is a recipient of the NSWCDD Distinguished Community Service Award. She was selected for her contributions to the community including her time volunteering with the STEAM Pupil Investment and Professional Encouragement lines (STEAMPIPElines) nonprofit organization. She contributes thousands of volunteer hours each year to develop activities and events that increase awareness and opportunities for youth and others to pursue technical careers.

As the president and founder of the STEAMPIPElines, she is passionate about closing the gaps and providing STEAM opportunities in Washington, D.C., and other underrepresented communities.

STEAMPIPElines incorporates career mentoring for youth, high school students, undergraduates, graduate students and adults. Each month a specific career path is emphasized. The organization provides STEAM kits, professional development and question and answer sessions with mentors who have had success in the field.

“If we provide more exposure to children, we will find that more children are interested in this educational opportunity,” Grier said. “They just need the proper coaching and resources.”

The nonprofit supports students by providing educational mock interviews, resume reviews, internships and fellowships, costs of living supplements, monthly scholarships and grants geared towards STEAM careers. STEAMPIPElines values inclusivity and convenience. The team operates out of libraries and recreation centers that are metro accessible and handicap accessible spaces to make it easier for the community to access.

“The goal is to focus on economic growth,” Grier said. “If I can help increase exposure to STEAM and steer people into the proper career pipelines, that will ultimately bring jobs into the communities that need them most.”

Grier’s inner cowgirl has lassoed a strong hold onto community service, supporting the Navy warfighter and giving back to her community. “To be able to focus my energy, time and passions into something I believe in, that is what drives me,” said Grier.

Grier will receive her award at the NSWCDD Honorary Awards Ceremony on March 10 at the Fredericksburg Expo and Conference Center.
