Naval Supply Systems Command’s Fleet Logistics Center San Diego (NAVSUP FLCSD) could be considered one of the least understood departments servicing Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC). They occupy a separate space from SWRMC and are rarely involved in-person with day-to-day events but play an important role with how our maintenance teams can finish repairs on time.
Though they are technically part of SWRMC with an assigned department code, NAVSUP FLCSD functions administratively as a separate command with over 1,000 crew and is one of eight fleet logistics centers under Naval Supply Systems Command.
They receive tasking from Commander, Naval Surface Force, Pacific Fleet (SURFPAC) with a mission is to provide logistical support to a variety of customers both in and out of SWRMC with a specialized focus on surface ship maintenance.
“It’s no secret that the success of any military plan involves having the right resources to carry out a mission,” said Capt. Brian Karosich. “Without their help, we could not meet warfighting readiness requirements associated with delivering ships back to the Fleet on-time.”
To meet their mission, NAVSUP FLCSD takes the unique approach of filling their ranks foremost with engineers and maintainers over pure supply technicians.
“Looking through the eyes of maintaining surface ships is different than other communities in the Navy,” said CDR Emma Larenas, acting head of operations at NAVSUP FLCSD. “The mission set and where ships operate is different. Likewise, how ships are used compared to aircraft is also different, along with their lifespan. Knowing these nuances is instrumental to the success of our support.”
This specialist-first philosophy allows employees to continually learn more about the systems they deal with every day, providing an extra layer in making sure they speak the same “language” as people they work with. By having a shared understanding of what needs to get done and when, all players in the process can be a force multiplier in mission accomplishment.
“I’m inspired by seeing the personal and professional satisfaction our crew gets when they succeed,” said Larenas. “At the end of the day, everyone here is committed to making sure our ships are getting underway.”
