NSWC Panama City Hosts ANTX 2017, Collaborates with NUWC Newport

By Jacqui Barker, Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division

ANTX 2017 is a multi-site event hosted by both NSWC PCD in Panama City, Florida and Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Newport on the same dates in August. The ANTX 2017 theme is “Battlespace Preparation in a Contested Environment (BPCE).”

"The Newport, Panama City ANTX is a huge opportunity for capability designers to have direct access to those driving the technical requirements. This venue is in fact high-velocity learning in action," said NSWC Panama City Division Technical Director Ed Stewart (SES).

ANTX provides a low-risk environment in which scientists and engineers may evaluate their technological innovations at the research and development level before their technologies become militarized and integrated at the operational level. ANTX is an annual multi-day event originally created by NUWC Division Newport to demonstrate future Navy technologies in action today. Naval warfare centers, universities, and industry partners have been invited to showcase their latest unmanned systems and related technologies.

NSWC Panama City Division will host more than 30 displays and demonstrations along the pier as well as in the waters of St. Andrew Bay where unmanned underwater vehicles will be tested and demonstrated for ANTX attendees. Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit SIX Detachment Panama City will conduct a pouncing demonstration in the bay waters Aug. 15, 2017 at 11 a.m.

Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Adm. Phil Davidson and the U.S. Navy’s Director of Expeditionary Warfare Maj. Gen David W. Coffman (OPNAV N95) will serve as NSWC PCD’s ANTX 2017 keynote speakers.

"This event will provide Fleet decision makers and stakeholders the opportunity to see these technologies on the water, operating in their intended environments, and then have the chance to ask questions about what is needed to advance these systems to the next step in the acquisition process,” said Stewart.

Consistent with the Battlespace Preparation in a Contested Environment theme, prototypes will exercise the collection, fusion, and transmission of data, with coordination between autonomous undersea, surface, and air platforms and their operators. NSWC Panama City will focus on the mine warfare mission (MIW) while NUWC Newport will focus on prototypes providing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). Both sites will also exercise payload delivery and cross-domain unmanned air, surface and underwater vehicle operations.

NSWC Panama City Division, an echelon four Naval Sea Systems Command Surface Warfare Center site, is the only U.S. Navy Warfare Center located along the Gulf of Mexico. NSWC Panama City Division serves as the Technical Center of Excellence for Littoral Warfare and Coastal Defense in support of mine warfare, diving and life support, naval special warfare and all other missions that occur in the littorals.
