During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. The first modernization action proposes to construct and operate a new graving dry dock and waterfront production facility to support current and future classes of the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (SERMC) reverse engineered the original aluminum piece, front left, to create prototype using a low-cost polymer in the top row. After a satisfactory fitment check, SERMC coordinated with Fleet Readiness Center Southeast (FRCSE) Detachment Mayport to identify the best material for the final part, front right, which is an aerospace-grade thermoplastic known for its strength, heat resistance, and flame retardancy.
