During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. WASHINGTON, DC (April 10, 2025) - The NAVSEA 62nd Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony for the USS Thresher (SSN 593) was held in Bldg. 201 at the Washington Navy Yard. Opening and closing remarks were given by Ms. Stephanie Link, Executive Director, In-Service Submarine Program Executive Office, Attack Submarines. Presentation remarks were given by Rear Adm. Todd Weeks, Program Executive Office, Strategic Submarines, Deputy Commander, Undersea Warfare. The USS Thresher was lost at sea with 129 personnel onboard. From this tragic event the Submarine Safety (SUBSAFE) Program was established to provide maximum integrity of critical systems and components.
