During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. Talking Shop: Celebrating NNSY’s Metal Forger Shop (Shop 11F)

Norfolk Naval Shipyard Metal Forging Shop (Shop 11F) Metal Forger Jesse Dalton was first introduced to blacksmithing when he was 12-years-old. “I started playing World of Warcraft and the character I created was a blacksmith,” said Dalton. “At the time I didn’t know everything a blacksmith did, so I started Googling and found it very interesting. This led me to become a member of the Tidewater Blacksmiths Guild, learning how to blacksmith seven years before enrolling in NNSY’s apprenticeship program for metal forging.”
