During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. The first modernization action proposes to construct and operate a new graving dry dock and waterfront production facility to support current and future classes of the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. Following demolition and construction, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) employees in the Operations Department brought in new furniture. NSWCDD’s Infrastructure Division handles the daily maintenance needs of more than 370 facilities and 2 million gross square feet at NSWCDD, including buildings, test pads, and even shelters for explosive operations.
