During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. Capt. Brian D. Lawrence speaks during his retirement ceremony Aug. 12, which directly followed the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Gulf Coast change of command ceremony where Capt. Nathan A. Schneider relieved Lawrence of command. Schneider assumed command of SSGC during a change of command ceremony Aug. 12. During Lawrence’s time as commanding officer, he oversaw ten Major Acquisition Category programs with a total contract value of over $56 billion, along with ship maintenance and modernization, planning yard, and post-delivery oversight. Lawrence successfully led the command through 33 sea trials and 12 ship deliveries.
