During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. SUFFOLK, Va. - Karen Wingeart – the 2016 Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Women Moving Forward Award winner – is pictured with her family upon her recent retirement from the Navy reserves. NAVSEA Commander Vice Adm. Thomas Moore announced Wingeart as the award winner in an April 2017 communiqué to NAVSEA employees based at Navy warfare centers and shipyards across the country. The Women Moving Forward award recognizes the contributions of individuals who promote equal opportunity in the workforce and continually make significant positive impacts to the command's mission and readiness. Wingeart - a the Navy's expert on Cooperative Engagement Capability systems for Ship Self-Defense Systems - served as a surface warfare officer and a meteorology and oceanography officer in her 20-year Navy career – 11 years on active duty and nine years in the reserves.
