During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. Navy Scientists and Engineers Increase Awareness of NSWCDD Technical Capabilities at Navy Yard Event

NSWCDD engineer Helmer Flores demonstrates how a shipboard Collective Protection System (CPS) filter housing works while briefing Rear Adm. Brian Antonio, program executive officer for the Littoral Combat Ships program, on the system and its capabilities. NSWCDD CBR Defense engineers designed the shipboard collective protection system to protect Sailors, critical operations, and equipment within selected areas of a ship, or zones, from CBR contamination when the ship is operating in a contaminated environment. Personnel in the protected zone do not need to wear protective clothing or masks which impose heat stress and can impact crew members' performance.
