PSNS & IMF celebrates Asian American-Pacific Islander Heritage Month

By Ben Hutto, PSNS & IMF Public Affairs

National Asian American-Pacific Islander Heritage Month began May 1, with the theme “Advancing Leaders Through Innovation: Bridging Our Histories, Shaping Our Future.”

Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility’s AAPI Employee Resource Group will mark the occasion, May 21, with a special observance in Building 850, room 301, which celebrates the unique mosaic of cultures that comprise the AAPI community, the Pacific Northwest and PSNS & IMF.

AAPI ERG member Josh Recaido will discuss what a lei is and the floral design's significance to island culture. Recaido will also outline the different styles of lei making.

In addition, AAPI EGR representatives are also scheduled to participate in the national observance in Washington, D.C., later this month. Members will tour the White House and the Pentagon before listening to a presentation by Capt. Juliette Cheng Taylor, the Senior Advisor for the Asian Pacific American Officers Committee.

The AAPI ERG holds monthly meetings every third Tuesday of the month, noon – 1 p.m., in the Building 850 Horseshoe Conference Room.

The AAPI ERG is committed to promoting networking, improving retention through professional and personal development, and working together to build the next generation of leaders.
