Norfolk Naval Shipyard breaks ground for its new production training facility

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility.  Participants in the groundbreaking, from left to right, are: Danielle Beamon, NNSY Acting Code 900 Training Group Superintendent; Craig Shadle, RQ Construction, LLC, Project Executive; Congressman Bobby Scott, 3rd Congressional District of Virginia; Captain Kai Torkelson, Shipyard Commander; David Wickersham, aide to Congresswoman Elaine Luria, 2nd Congressional District of Virginia; Commander Ben Wainwright, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Public Works Officer; Robert Fogel, Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Project Superintendent; Chakeita Dickson, NNSY Command University Leadership Development Branch Head.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard Dedicates Submarine Maintenance Facility

Norfolk Naval Shipyard dedicates its new Submarine Maintenance Facility June 14, consolidating submarine maintenance, production and support shops into a single facility adjacent to the shipyard's submarine drydocks and piers.  Participating in the ribbon-cutting from left to right are NNSY Submarine Program Manager Pat Ensley, Shipyard Commander Captain Kai Torkelson, and NAVFAC Public Works Officer Commander Ben Wainwright.

Naval Sea Systems Command Inclusion & Engagement Council First Field Trip Opens Eyes

Naval Sea Systems Command Inclusion and Engagement Councel holds their quarterly meeting. This marks the first time that the quarterly meeting was held outside of Washington Navy Yard.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard supported D-Day with building, modernizing five different types of ships

Among the five classes of ships NNSY built or modernized to support the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, the shipyard constructed two destroyers.  The first was USS Herndon (DD-638), commissioned December 1942. On June 6, Herndon was ahead of the first wave of troops raining a volley of shells upon enemy targets on Omaha Beach. Despite drawing heavy fire, Herndon not only remained intact but stayed another two weeks shoring up the Allied grip on the region.   The 1,630-ton destroyer USS Shubrick (DD-639) was also constructed in 1942, in record time, at NNSY.  Shubrick supported Normandy clearing the beach at Belfast for Allied troops.   Shubrick stayed in the region well into July, serving as escort, providing fire support, and conducting anti-submarine patrols.

The Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) Annual Safety Flag Award is given to those whose overall commitment to and improvements in safety stand out above the rest. It encompasses lowering injury rates, and involvement from employees all the way to leadership. For 2018, the winner showed all these traits and an outstanding commitment to a safe and healthful workplace – Code 960’s (Pipefitting Division) Shop 56 (Pipe Shop).

Norfolk Naval Shipyard's MWR Director Chad Rickner, CNIC Recreation Manager Leslie Gould, Contractor for Bliss Products Kelly Robinson, NNSY Facilities Development Foreman Steve O'Neal, and Norfolk Naval Shipyard Commander Capt. Kai Torkelson cut the ribbon in celebration of the new picnic tables and playground equipment at Scott Center Annex.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month Kicks off with Record Attendance
