Norfolk Naval Shipyard breaks ground for its new production training facility

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. Participants in the groundbreaking, from left to right, are: Danielle Beamon, NNSY Acting Code 900 Training Group Superintendent; Craig Shadle, RQ Construction, LLC, Project Executive; Congressman Bobby Scott, 3rd Congressional District of Virginia; Captain Kai Torkelson, Shipyard Commander; David Wickersham, aide to Congresswoman Elaine Luria, 2nd Congressional District of Virginia; Commander Ben Wainwright, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Public Works Officer; Robert Fogel, Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Project Superintendent; Chakeita Dickson, NNSY Command University Leadership Development Branch Head.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard dedicates its new Submarine Maintenance Facility June 14, consolidating submarine maintenance, production and support shops into a single facility adjacent to the shipyard's submarine drydocks and piers. Participating in the ribbon-cutting from left to right are NNSY Submarine Program Manager Pat Ensley, Shipyard Commander Captain Kai Torkelson, and NAVFAC Public Works Officer Commander Ben Wainwright.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard supported D-Day with building, modernizing five different types of ships

Among the five classes of ships NNSY built or modernized to support the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, the shipyard constructed two destroyers. The first was USS Herndon (DD-638), commissioned December 1942. On June 6, Herndon was ahead of the first wave of troops raining a volley of shells upon enemy targets on Omaha Beach. Despite drawing heavy fire, Herndon not only remained intact but stayed another two weeks shoring up the Allied grip on the region. The 1,630-ton destroyer USS Shubrick (DD-639) was also constructed in 1942, in record time, at NNSY. Shubrick supported Normandy clearing the beach at Belfast for Allied troops. Shubrick stayed in the region well into July, serving as escort, providing fire support, and conducting anti-submarine patrols.

New waterjet cutting machine increases efficiency at Norfolk Naval Shipyard

A Norfolk Naval Shipyard worker monitors a precision water cut on the shipyard's new water jet cutting machine. The shipyard uses the water jet cutting machine to fabricate new parts or replace worn parts during maintenance availabilities. The machine cuts a wide variety of materials using a high- pressure jet of water mixed with an abrasive substance. It was purchased and installed as part of NAVSEA's efforts to replace worn equipment and improve productivity.
NNSY Completes USS Maryland’s Engineered Refueling Overhaul
