NREIP Interns Impact Navy Technologies, Return to College, Plan DoD Careers

DAHLGREN, Va. — Florida State University student Charisa Powell presents her research on the “Development of Software Tools for Simulation Prototypes” to military and government personnel during her 2016 summer internship. Powell - among 22 students who completed their internships at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) - is working towards a bachelor’s degree in computer science. The Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP) encourages students to pursue science and engineering careers, furthers education via mentoring and their participation in research, and makes them aware of Navy research and technology efforts, which can lead to civilian employment within the Navy.

NSWCDD holds Vietnam War Commemoration Event

Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Commanding Officer CAPT Brian Durant pauses with ten Vietnam War Veterans after personally honoring them with commemorative pins and certificates during a ceremony at the command's Vietnam Commemoration held at the University of Mary Washington, Aug. 11. The event's keynote speaker, Brig. Gen. Wilma Vaught, USAF retired, (left) recounted the women in service - as well as her own service - during the Vietnam era and the challenges they faced. She was the first woman to deploy with an Air Force bomber unit, the first Air Force woman graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and one of the most-decorated military women in U.S. history.

Congressional Staffers Tour NSWC Dahlgren Division

DAHLGREN, Va. - Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) senior engineer Ralph Stewart briefs congressional staffers on the 105 MM gun weapon system during the delegation's tour of the NSWCDD Battle Management System and Laboratory, July 29. The staffers - representing congressmen and women from Rhode Island, California, Alabama, Virginia, Hawaii, Indiana and Oklahoma - also received tours and briefings on the electromagnetic railgun, directed energy, virtualization, cybersecurity, and combined integrated air and missile defense-antisubmarine warfare. NSWCDD is a premier research and development center that serves as a specialty site for weapon system integration. The command's unique ability to rapidly introduce new technology into complex warfighting systems is based on its longstanding competencies in science and technology, research and development, and test and evaluation.

U.S. Navy Submarine History Makes 'Deep' STEM Impact on Students

WASHINGTON - Middle and high school students from Camp Dogwood Summer Academy take a break during their visit to the National Museum of the United States Navy, July 12. Retired Navy officers joined scientists and engineers from Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division and a museum official to brief the 29 students on submarines and exhibits ranging from a diving capsule and torpedo room to a periscope and artic undersea operations, including ice breakthroughs.

Navy Railgun Engineer & STEM Inspires Middle Schoolers at Summer Camp

KING GEORGE. Va. – Navy electromagnetic railgun engineer David Campbell observes middle school students constructing the balsa wood towers they designed at the 2016 Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD)-sponsored Navy science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Summer Academy, held June 27 to July 1. Campbell – who became enthusiastic about STEM as a middle school student at the annual summer camp – returned to the camp as a Navy engineer to inspire and mentor students in STEM.

NSWCDD’s AEGIS team awarded for “exceptional” support in Romania

Rear Adm. J.R. Wolfe, Program Executive for Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) recently applauded the efforts of NSWCDD’s Aegis team for “exceptional support provided while reviewing the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System (AAMDS) Baseline 9.B1.0.0.1E in Romania during Operational Deployment.”

NSWCDD’s leadership presented the team members with awards during the last quarterly Management Forum held in May.  Awardees included Annabelle Bequio, Tracy Blake, Carolyn Blakelock, Ronald DeClute, Stephen “Pete” Gaither, Mike Gammill, Jolymar Gonzalez-Esteves, David Hayes, Michael Huang, Joe Janney and Hitendra Thakkar.

Admiral Honors Navy Scientist for Leadership Impacting U.S. Fleet Ballistic Missile Program

ATLANTIC OCEAN (June 2, 2014) - A Trident II D-5 ballistic missile launches from the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS West Virginia (SSBN 736) during a missile test at the Atlantic Missile Range. Two years later – on June 2, 2016 – Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) Director Vice Adm. Terry Benedict presented the SSP Director's Award to Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) senior scientist Kim Payne for leadership impacting the Fleet Ballistic Missile Program. Payne was honored for her expertise in fire control software and targeting models as well as quality assurance methodology enhancements to improve Fleet Ballistic Missile deployed software product effectiveness and efficiency. Benedict said her efforts, “directly contributed to the Fleet Ballistic Missile Program and successful SSGN (Ohio-class guided-missile submarine) conversion software initiatives.”  (U.S. Navy photo/Released)
