Navy Scientists Use World War II Era Test Tunnel to Develop High Energy Laser Weapons for Fleet

DAHLGREN, Va. - Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) scientists Chris Von Hohenleiten and Emily Martin prepare for a laser lethality test by ensuring the optics are aligned correctly. The laser experts aligned the optics in the Navy's Laser Lethality and Development Laboratory which features an above-ground tunnel used for evaluating high energy laser weapon systems. The tunnel - crucial to gun range operations during World War II - was recently transformed into a vital new capability for testing laser technologies, NSWCDD officials announced April 21.

NSWCDD Engineer Wins NAVSEA Women Moving Forward Award

DAHLGREN, Va. – Navy engineer Karen Wingeart is the 2016 Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Women Moving Forward Award winner. NAVSEA Commander Vice Adm. Thomas Moore announced Wingeart as the award winner in an April 2, 2017 communiqué to NAVSEA employees based at Navy warfare centers and shipyards across the country. The Women Moving Forward award recognizes the contributions of individuals who promote equal opportunity in the workforce and continually make significant positive impacts to the command's mission and readiness. As a government civilian, Wingeart serves as a systems engineer and technical program lead for Cooperative Engagement Capability integration on Ship Self Defense System platforms and DDG-1000. She recently retired after a 20-year career on the Navy’s military side – 11 years on active duty and nine years in the reserves – as a surface warfare officer and a meteorology and oceanography officer.

Navy Scientist Wins Award for War Gaming Simulation Innovation, Available to DoD

DAHLGREN, Va. - Dr. Mary Ann Cummings won the 2016 Naval Sea Systems Command Scientist of the Year Award for a modeling and simulation innovation called Orchestrated Simulation through Modeling (OSM). "We can create simulations that show what could happen and take data from an exercise to show how that exercise might play out as a real event," said Cummings. U.S. Navy Engineer Wins ‘STEM Oscar’ at 2017 BEYA Award Gala

WASHINGTON (Feb. 11, 2017) - Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Commander Rear Adm. Tom Druggan presents the Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) Community Service Award to Dwayne Nelson, NSWC Dahlgren Division engineer, at the 31st annual BEYA gala. "This award has inspired and challenged me to contribute more towards empowering our youth and others to serve our community while encouraging interest in highly-rewarding science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields," said Nelson. Japanese Military and Ministry of Defense Delegation Visits Dahlgren

DAHLGREN, Va. - Military and civilian leaders from Japan's Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) and Ministry of Defense are pictured in front of the U.S. Navy's electromagnetic railgun prototype launcher after observing a live railgun demonstration, Feb. 7. Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) engineers briefed the delegation on electromagnetic launchers and hypervelocity projectiles at the command's railgun facility. Subsequently, the 19 JSDF officers and Ministry of Defense officials visited the Center for Surface Combat Systems and AEGIS Training and Readiness Center to learn more about AEGIS training and observe the Baseline 9 lab, collocated with NSWCDD at Naval Support Facility Dahlgren. 

The military officers represented the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) as well as the Japanese Army and Air Force. JMSDF is the naval branch of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, tasked with the naval defense of Japan. It also participates in UN-led peacekeeping operations and maritime interdiction operations. The Center for Strategic and International Studies - who sponsored and coordinated the visit - is a bipartisan, nonprofit policy research organization dedicated to providing strategic insights and policy solutions to help decision-makers chart a course toward a better world.

Navy Civilian Recognized for Human Resources Impact on Four NAVSEA Commands

(Jan. 17, 2017)— Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Operations Department Head Mike Purello presents the Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Medal to Janet Day at a ceremony held at the University of Mary Washington Dahlgren campus. “I always learned from the organizations I support,” said Day, who was honored for her exemplary support to four Naval Sea Systems Command field activities. “These organizations and the incredibly talented, hard-working and professional military, civilians, and contractors who perform their mission on a day-to-day basis were a pleasure to work with, and for, and I thank them for the opportunity."

CNO Hosts All Hands Call - Tours Navy Electric Weapon and Cyber Warfare Engineering Facilities

NSWC Dahlgren Division Human Resources Specialist Wins Annual NAVSEA Warfare Center Award

Ally Regan was honored with the 2016 Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Warfare Center Human Resources Division Award – known as the "The Philip Heiler Award for Human Resources Excellence".  The award citation recognized Regan, the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division Staffing and Classification Branch Head, for outstanding recruitment and staffing leadership. She was also recognized for significant contributions to the NAVSEA Warfare Center human resources community as the lead for the staffing community of practice.
