NEEC Students Tour NSWC Dahlgren Division

By NSWC Dahlgren Division Corporate Communications

DAHLGREN, Va. (April 26, 2017) - Roger Campbell, a Navy lethality engineer, explains the Laser Lethality and Development lab capabilities to undergraduate and graduate students touring Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) during the annual Naval Engineering Education Consortium (NEEC) meeting.  The students are looking through a 16" optic lens - part of the NSWCDD Laser Technology and  Analysis Branch laboratory's optics layout - used for evaluating laser effectiveness against various materials.

Campbell briefed students on how his lethality work impacts the evaluation of high energy laser technology in addition to the design and development process required to integrate future laser weapon systems in various platforms. NEEC is a collaborative effort that connects Navy technical experts with academia to create partnerships that generate real innovation.

As a catalyst for developing the Navy's future workforce, professors and students at universities nationwide are conducting research and development on naval-relevant topics at their campus laboratories. NEEC provides multiyear funding for project-based, hands-on research conducted during the academic year. The three primary objectives of the NEEC initiative are: acquire academic research results and products to resolve naval technology challenges;  hire college graduates with research and development experience into the Naval Sea System Command workforce; and cultivate exceptional working relationships with naval engineering colleges, universities, professors, and academics.
