NSWC Corona to Host Open House

By Troy Clarke Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division will host a public open house at the Norco naval base on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for all ages to discover the fun of science and engineering.

The free event is an opportunity for the American public to visit one of the country's prestigious federal labs.

"Not many people realize we have hundreds of Navy scientists and engineers making impacts around the world," says Capt. Steve Murray, NSWC Corona commanding officer. "As a science and engineering command, this is an exciting opportunity for the public to learn about our mission, our one-of-a-kind facilities and interact with some of the Navy's finest, working behind the scenes right here in the Inland Empire."

To help build the next generation of Navy scientists and engineers, exhibits will focus on science, technology, engineering and math - STEM - such as thermal imaging cameras, the engineering behind the Navy's "Top Gun" training systems, a CYCLOPSS drone, and information on scholarships and internships with the Navy. The lineup of activities also includes tours of laboratories, a laser light experience, free photos with a direct descendant of the Sir Isaac Newton apple tree, and hands-on fun with remote-controlled Sea Perches. Community exhibitors and educational partners will also present engaging STEM activities for visitors.

"We've been a proud member of the community for decades, and we always enjoy having the community aboard to showcase what we do," says Murray.

Attendees will need to enter through the gate at 2300 Fifth Street in Norco no earlier than 9:45 a.m.; drivers must present a valid license, current vehicle registration and insurance. Police will conduct vehicle spot checks. Photography is prohibited on base. Electronic devices aren't permitted in the activity areas, so visitors will need to leave all electronic devices, such as smartphones, in their vehicles.

News media will need to make prior arrangements for base access. Contact Public Affairs Officer Troy Clarke at 951-393-5137 or 951-538-3207 for details.

About NSWC Corona: The Navy's presence in the Inland Empire marks its 75th year this December when President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Corona Naval Hospital at the luxurious Norconian Hotel and Resort just days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Decades later, NSWC Corona remains at the center of the original property as the headquarters of more than 2,600 scientists, engineers, contractors and support staff. Home to three premiere national laboratory and assessment centers - the Joint Warfare Assessment Lab (JWAL), Measurement Science and Technology Lab (MSTL), and the Daugherty Memorial Assessment Center (DMAC) - NSWC Corona is the Navy's premiere independent analysis and assessment agent that helps warfighters train, fight and win.
