NSWC Dahlgren Division Engineer Recognized for Unique Approach to Helicopter Landings on Aircraft Carriers
June 18, 2020
ATLANTIC OCEAN (June 4, 2020) – The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) transits the Atlantic Ocean. Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) engineer Carl Hager won the 2020 Warfare Centers Innovation Award for his contributions on a novel approach to characterize the likelihood of radio frequency overexposure affecting personnel during helicopter landings on the Ford. The Dual Band Radar aboard the Ford facilitated the Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Personnel risk characterization during the development of a concept of operations to minimize radiation exposure for helicopters landing on aircraft carriers. Navy Junior Engineer Wins HSI Award for Impact on New Wearable Technologies
June 8, 2020
DAHLGREN, Va. — Virginia Commonwealth University student Alex Kniffin presents his research on “Wide-Aperture Forecasting” to military and government personnel during her 2016 summer internship. Kniffin - among 22 students who completed their internships at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) - is working towards a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Kniffen developed a framework for creating alternative scenarios in order to create a prediction on the advancements of technology and reduce technological surprise. “This allowed him to work with technical experts to incorporate their knowledge into the technological forecasting process,” said Dr. Elizabeth Haro, Human Systems Integration engineer. The Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP) encourages students to pursue science and engineering careers, furthers education via mentoring and their participation in research, and makes them aware of Navy research and technology efforts, which can lead to civilian employment within the Navy.

NSWC Dahlgren Division Deputy Director for Small Business Wins 2020 AFCEA International Award
May 19, 2020
IMAGE: KING GEORGE, Va. – Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Deputy for Small Business Kris Parker speaks with II Corps Consultants, Inc., executive Earnest King at an NSWCDD event for small businesses. A Small Business Administration final rule to implement the 2018 Small Business Runway Extension Act effective on Jan. 6, 2020 is good news for Dahlgren, according to Parker. The law increased the period of measuring small businesses’ annual revenue from three to five years in the contract evaluation process. “This change to five years is a logical move, as it helps account for the cyclical nature of contract awards,” he said. “It should really help increase our potential small business base.” (U.S. Navy photo/Released)

High School Student Builds Autonomous Underwater Robot via NSWC Dahlgren Division’s SeaGlide Program
May 11, 2020
IMAGE: KING GEORGE, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth Governor’s School student Alex Dachos is pictured with the autonomous underwater glider he built over the course of a year via the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) SeaGlide Program. Dachos programmed, built, and demonstrated the SeaGlide independently under the guidance of NSWCDD science, technology, engineering and mathematics mentors. The robot collects data through sensors while moving and gliding by changing its pitch and buoyancy, often by taking in or expelling water. (U.S. Navy photo/Released)
