NSWCDD Commanding Officer Joins Veterans at Dahlgren Speed Mentoring Event

KING GEORGE, Va.  (Jan. 24, 2020) – Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Karl Steinsberger, Jr., a computer scientist in the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Combat Systems Cyber Engineering Branch, and Serita Seright, an engineer in NSWCDD Gun and Electric Weapons Systems Department participate in a 10-minute short, focused conversation at the Veteran Speed Mentoring Event held at the University of Mary Washington, Dahlgren campus. “I want to see how they become mentors and follow in that path,” Seright said before joining the session as a mentee. “You are a very important asset to the United States Navy or whatever service you support,” was the message Steinsberger hoped to leave with the veterans he mentored at the event hosted by the NSWCDD Workforce Development and Veteran Integration Program. Secretary Geurts visits Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard with an eye on the future

James F. Geurts, assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition, looks into Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility’s Dry Dock #3. In Fiscal Year 2022 once the last Los Angeles-class submarine availability is complete, the shipyard’s Dry Dock #3 will become obsolete due to its size. To maintain and grow PHNSY & IMF’s nuclear maintenance capacity and provide best value to taxpayers, the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program will optimize this critical shipyard location.

NSWCDD Engineer’s Desire to Serve Stems from Childhood

Casey Plew, NSWCDD commanding officer, hold the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) they signed at a ceremony held at the UMW Dahlgren campus, Jan. 31. Looking on are Dr. Nina Mikhalevsky, the university’s provost, and Darren Barnes, NSWCDD acting technical director, who also signed the MOU which enables NSWCDD employees who qualify for the program to earn a project management certificate while applying the credits towards a Master of Business Administration. “We are excited at the University of Mary Washington about this partnership and program,” said Paino. “This program really aligns with our mission and vision moving forward. NSWC Dahlgren Division Cyber Engineer Wins Copernicus Award

IMAGE: DAHLGREN, Va. (Jan. 14, 2020) – U.S. Navy civilian cyber engineer Jay Blalock won the Copernicus Award, the Chief of Naval Operations announced in a message, Jan. 14. Blalock is recognized for his impact on the Navy's cyber security testing capability while leading cybersecurity systems engineering efforts to architect a safe cyber test environment for the Navy. “I am extremely humbled, and honored to have been nominated and selected to receive this award,” said Blalock, program manager and cyber test engineer for a distributed cyber test architecture called USS Secure at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD). “This award is the result of the hard work of a large group of people that are dedicated to ensuring the safety of the fleet through cyber testing and hardening.” (U.S. Navy photo/Released)
