Navy Integrates Weapon Systems with Unmanned Vehicles for New Surface Warfare Capability

A Scan Eagle unmanned aerial vehicle launches from the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Potomac River Test Range during a surface warfare integration test featuring the virtual USS Dahlgren. Scan Eagle identified, targeted, engaged and supported reengagement throughout the experiment as the NSWCDD-patented Visual Automatic Scoring System sent gun targeting corrections to the MK160 gun weapon system operator. "USS Dahlgren is empowering our integration of unmanned air and surface vehicles into the fire-control-loop for greatly expanded battle space and increased reaction times," said Neil Baron, NSWCDD distinguished scientist for combat control.

A middle school student uses remote-controlled models to solve simulated naval robotic missions at a science, technology, engineering and mathematics summer academy, sponsored by the National Defense Education Program. The annual summer academy ran from June 24 to 28 at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Va. Ninety-five students from five school districts engaged in the summer camp.

Navy Scientist Honored for "Pivotal" Impact on Fleet Ballistic Missile Strategic Weapons System's Success

ATLANTIC OCEAN (June 2, 2014) - A Trident II D-5 ballistic missile launches from the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS West Virginia (SSBN 736) during a missile test at the Atlantic Missile Range. Two years later – on June 2, 2016 – Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) Director Vice Adm. Terry Benedict presented the SSP Director's Award to Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) senior scientist Kim Payne for leadership impacting the Fleet Ballistic Missile Program. Payne was honored for her expertise in fire control software and targeting models as well as quality assurance methodology enhancements to improve Fleet Ballistic Missile deployed software product effectiveness and efficiency. Benedict said her efforts, “directly contributed to the Fleet Ballistic Missile Program and successful SSGN (Ohio-class guided-missile submarine) conversion software initiatives.” (U.S. Navy photo/Released)
