Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division Partners with UCSB to Build Innovative Corrosion Testing System for Combat Systems

A final prototype setup constructed by University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) mechanical engineering student Matthew Kaplan to model the flow needed in the automated corrosion testing system. The system has a sump pump in the middle and two rotating arms on either side. The five seniors from UCSB, along with Armen Kvryan, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division’s lead materials engineer, have been working on the automated corrosion testing system project since last September.

Adrian Wos, mechanical engineer for the Navy’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) and the Naval Acquisition Development Program (NADP), cleans and post-processes a 3D printer-made, model-scale propeller. Wos is one of two interns participating in NSWC PHD’s In-Service Engineering Agent collaboration with MARMC and NADP’s virtual internship program.

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division Led Critical Steps in Successful Flight Test Aegis Weapon System-44 (FTM-44)

On Nov. 16, U.S. Missile Defense Agency and Navy sailors aboard USS John Finn (DDG 113), an Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System-equipped destroyer, fired a Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA guided missile that successfully intercepted and destroyed a mock Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) during a flight test demonstration in the broad ocean area northeast of Hawaii.

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division personnel supported the complex at-sea test while aboard the John Finn and from various shore-based command and control locations around the Pacific region.
