Dog Walking:
•Cleaning up after your dog is a must! Be sure you are picking up dog waste. You will often see Japanese dog owners with water bottles to rinse away urine.
• Japan has a leash law and you are not permitted to let your dog run loose. If you want to be able to let your dog off the leash there are places called “Dog Runs”. You can find more information on those below.
Trains and Taxis with your pet:
•You can bring a small dog or cat on train as long as you keep it in a cage. Pet strollers are available in most pet stores in Japan and can be more convenient way of moving your pet through a busy train station.
•You can generally ride in a taxi with a pet as long as it is in cage. This may vary depending on the taxi driver and if they are comfortable having an animal onboard.
Dog Parks
Being able to let your dog exercise off a leash can be a challenge with the leash laws and living in such a densely populated areas. Dog parks sometimes called “Dog Runs” are a good solution if you would like to let your dog off the leash.
On-base:
Wiggly Field Dog Park -- Yokosuka
Located at the corner of Langley St. and Saratoga St., The park is an acre of fenced and secure grassy area for your dog to run and play. There is a watering station and shaded benches for sitting. Trash and waste receptacles are on site to keep the park clean. Bring your dog out and enjoy.
Dragon Vale Dog Run – Sasebo
Located on Florida Drive near Kizuna Tower the park is a fenced and secure grassy area for your dog to run and play.
Off-base:
You can find Dog Runs in most cities in Japan and even at many of the larger highway rest areas. Some locations charge a fee and have registration requirements, like proof of rabies vaccination and may not allow certain breeds. Doing a quick internet search of Dog parks in your city, you should be able to find multiple locations. Most websites are in Japanese but using Google translate should allow you easily find hours, location and other important information.
